Follow Friday!

Hey readers! It's another Follow Friday post! Hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read, this week's question is...

Q: You are a matchmaker — your goal, hook up two characters from two of your favorite books. Who would it be? How do you think it would go?

A: I'd choose Cammie Morgan from the Ghallger Girls series and Gene from The Hunt. Both are human but lead strange lives. Cammie is a spy in training, while Gene is a human that secretly lives as a fake vampire in a vampire run world. They both have secrets they keep from others, and seem like they could survive in any situation.

In a platonic hook up, I'd choose Wendy from the Trylle series, and Mia from the Princess Diaries series. Both are princesses who rule a fake country, but totally keeps us entertained. Seems like they'd tell some excellent stories about being princesses.

Be sure to leave your link so I can read your answers too. Happy Friday!

Review: Until I Die by Amy Plum

Book: Until I Die by Amy Plum
                                     Pages: 353
                                     Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                                     Source: Library
                                     *may contain spolers

Short Synopsis: Though Kate has fallen in love with Vincent, but now everyone is on the lookout for the numa, since their leader was taken down.

My Thoughts: I was excited to get this book, but found it really difficult to complete.

After the downfall of the numa leader, Kate and Vincent finally have some time to themselves. But after the New Year's celebration, Vincent feels that Kate must have extra attention as she travels to and from their house, as they fear that the numa might attack at any moment.
The house also gains two revenants. Violette and Arthur. And though both seem to want to help the cause, they are very reluctant to have anything to do with humans. It takes Violette awhile to warm up to Kate, but they soon form a friendship, as they find a common love of movies. But Kate is reluctant to form a friendship with Arthur as Arthur is quick to exclude Kate from a revenant meeting.
Aside from the two newcomers, Vincent is trying something new to help their relationship and is reluctant to tell Kate the specifics. Kate goes off on her own, as she searches for a cure for Vincent as she wants him to become human again.
And if things weren't stressful enough, the group finds out that there may be a leak in the revenant group, and all signs point to Arthur. Can Kate find a cure for Vincent, and can Kate prove that Arthur is the one to not be trusted, before the numa gains even more advantage?

I was so excited when I got this book, because I loved the first one, and I couldn't wait to read more. Unfortunately, I couldn't stand the writing style. There were many times when I wanted to give up on the novel, as it felt extremely boring, even though there was a lot of history behind the story.
I wasn't able to get into the rhythm of the novel, until the second half. I loved reading about the relationship between Kate and Vincent, and there were still hints that Jules wanted something more with Kate, besides friendship.
I wasn't too fond of the new addition, Violette and Arthur. And though Violette seemed to form a friendship with Kate, I still wasn't sold. There's a bit more history about the revenants. I didn't like the fact that everyone was keeping secrets.
To be honest, I also was a bit confused between what had happened with Violette and Vincent and the numa. Overall, it was an okay read, I wasn't completely thrilled with some of the situations involved, but it still makes me want to read the next one in the series.

Would I recommend this book: Maybe

Rating: I give this book a 3.5/5.

Review: Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep

E-ARC: Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep
                                               Pages: 336
                                               Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                                               Source: Sent from author

Short Synopsis: Mythos Academy is under attack. The Reapers are trying to find the Helheim dagger, and will stop at nothing to get it. Being Nike's champion, Gwen must do everything in her power to keep the dagger carefully hidden, and out of reach of The Reapers before anything more drastic can happen.

My Thoughts: I love this series. If you haven't read A Touch Of Frost yet, this is one series to definitely sink your teeth in.

While working on a last minute school paper with her friends Daphne and Carson, the museum gets attacked by a group of Reapers. And since there is no real means of escape, Gwen and her friends stay, and fight back.
After the attack, students lives were lost, sending the school into a dark somber. Gwen and her friends find out that the Reapers badly want an artifact called the Helheim dagger. An artifact that her own mother once hid long ago.
Gwen must find out why the Reapers want this artifact, and how to keep it from them as long as possible. And if things couldn't get worse, Gwen has no idea what's going on with Daphne, and where she stands with her relationship with Logan, and if she wants to continue to be Nike's champion. Gwen must get to the bottom of the Helheim situation before things get too out of hand.

Another great read by Jennifer Estep. I seriously couldn't take my eyes off this series. Gwen might not be the strongest, or the most perfect, but when it comes to her friends, nothing can stop her. Gwen always has drama in her life, but she always finds time to help those she cares about.
I loved reading the on going relationship between Gwen and Logan, but am hoping that they will ultimately become a couple. There were a lot situations going on with this novel, and we get to find out more about each characters' past, including Gwen, Daphne and even Logan. I felt that this novel was more emotional, and couldn't wait to find out more.
I felt sympathy towards Daphne and what she was going through, as well as Gwen, as she finds out who her mother's real killer was. The Fenrir wolf was an interesting turn of events, and I can't wait to find out how Gwen will deal with the idea. It was also shocking to read that Gwen was having second thoughts about becoming Nike's champion, but also understandable. All in all, a great read, and one to definitely look forward to, especially if you've followed along since the beginning.

Would I recommend this book: Yes.

Rating: I give this book a 4/5.

Review: Prom Dates To Die For by Various Authors

Book: Prom Dates To Die For by Various authors
                                      Pages: 131
                                      Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                                      Source: Sent from Buzz Books

Short Synopsis: Get lost in a world filled with monsters, ghosts, and supernatural hunters, all teaming up to give you one crazy night at the prom.

My Thoughts: A fun, entertaining read, with different, unique stories, will leave you curious for more.

Prom Dates To Die For takes you on a wild adventure, filled with creepy monsters, ranging from a dark angel, sucking souls from humans, to a prom queen seeking revenge and justice, to even a heroine who gets more than she bargained for on her eighteenth birthday.
Prom Dates To Die For, gives readers the night of their lives, with a mix of paranormal world, that readers will be sure to sink their teeth into.

I usually don't review anthologies, as it's usually pretty tough to give a review of each individual story involved. But this novel overall, was a fun, cute, entertaining read about the different unique stories about prom.
My favorite story was Darkness Becomes Him by Kelly Parra, two hunters searching for an angel gone bad, sucking the souls of humans at prom, and during the process, they find out that they have feelings for each other. I really enjoyed this first novel, and wished that it had developed into a little more lengthy novel.
Another interesting story was Every Breath You Take by Lena Brown, as readers discover a girl who buys a dress for prom, is suddenly a victim of possession, determined to right a wrong from the past.
All these stories that are centered around the theme of prom have an easy flow, with characters who leave the readers wanting more of the paranormal world. I loved how each story was filled with something different, but also had a hint of romance involved as well. Each story will suck the reader into an out of this world experience.

Would I recommend this book: Yes

Rating: I give this book a 3.5/5.

Are You A Prude?

Did I get your attention? I usually don't post pictures this racy on my blog, but I found it to be very fitting for the topic of conversation. (And this was the only picture that was the most modest.) Let's face it. We all know that sex sells in the media, especially in this day in age. Just look at the author of 50 Shades of Gray. I haven't read it yet, but I really want to, to see for myself what all the hoopla is about, but at the moment, I'm wait listed on the library at number 102. And who hasn't read/watched the True Blood series? It's definitely not a new subject, but my concern is for the younger generation.
The issue of sexuality has been increasing in the young adult genre, even more so, in the 21st century. I remember reading books as a teen when kissing was as far as it went. Are we as a general group, too obsessed with the issue of sex? I know I was shocked to read a comment from an 11 year old stating that True Blood was her favorite show, and it was recommended from her mother. True Blood has a TON of sex and violent scenes, and I feel has too much mature content for any 11 year old to watch.
And sex is also creeping up even in advertising. I was searching for pictures to add to this particular post to prove my point, and under the topic of "Sex Sells," I found this advertising:

I was completely shocked that Burger King of all fast food places, had this. If a little kid saw this picture, how would parents explain the relation to the picture and the words? And with the slogan of "It Just Tastes Better" on the side, was that a pun intended?

Aside from the media, and adult fiction books, I am currently reading a young adult book of Until I Die by Amy Plum. And though it was very minor and subtle, there is a passage where it hinted that a character was gay. I'm all for gay/lesbian rights, but what happens when it starts creeping up in young adult, and kids as little as 11 years old are reading? How do parents deal with the issue of gay/lesbian issues to kids? How young is too young to deal with this topic at all? I don't know about the rest of you guys, but when I was growing up, I was raised in a conservative household, and it was frowned upon if we saw anything as racy as True Blood. And of course my sisters and I watched Sex And The City when it was popular (but we were all in our late teens by then), and we just watched it without our parents knowing. And we all know movies are getting even more daring too. Just look at Breaking Dawn part one. I guess, what I'm trying to say is, even though I get sucked into the drama of it all just as much as the next person (pun definitely not intended), I'm just deeply saddened by what our generation has come to.

That Bookish Pile

Due to even more recent events, and comments on TSS site, I choose to no longer participate in IMM. For now, I'm also not sure if I'll be participating in a different meme or not, but for now, I guess I'll be posting on my own. I take no credit for the name, in case someone else claims to have thought of the title, and Inspirational credit goes to The Story Siren. Anyway, on to the books...

I didn't get any books for review this week, but I got a huge stack of books to keep me occupied from...

 Library:

Until I Die -- Amy Plum

In Too Deep -- Amanda Grace

The Cinderella Society -- Kay Cassidy

The Book of Blood And Shadow -- Robin Wasserman

Sometimes It Happens -- Lauren Barnholdt

Yours, Mine, and Ours -- MaryJanice Davidson

The Lucky One -- Nicholas Sparks

Aces Up -- Lauren Barnholdt.

Anyway, that's all the awesome good books that I got this week that I can't wait to dive into. Be sure to leave your link and let me know what goodies you guys got too. :)

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?
--From Amazon

My Thoughts:

I was so super excited to get this book because there had been so much rave about this novel in the blogosphere. As I cracked open this novel, I didn't know what to expect. But as I kept reading, nothing really seemed to hold my attention.
I wasn't a real fan of the main character Anna, as I felt she was a bit too much of a goody two shoes. Sure she might not be all the way human, but she acted so saintly in the beginning that it really got to me, because in reality, not that many people act that way. And then there was a situation with the drugs. I was furious that she wasn't even more angry and upset about what had happened, and that she wasn't furious at the individual that gave her the drugs.
Though her relationship with Kaidan was the only thing that was remotely interesting, I just felt that there wasn't much that had kept me interested. It felt like a mix of overdone genres, and I had stopped reading somewhere in the middle of their trip to see her father. There wasn't much of a real explanation of what was happening at the time, and overall, it just felt really lacking.

Would I recommend this book: No

Rating: I give this book a DNF.

Review: On Demon Wings by Karina Halle

E-ARC: On Demon Wings by Karina Halle
                                              (Experiment In Terror #5)
                                              Pages: 198
                                              Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                                              Source: Sent from author

Short Synopsis: Perry is dealing with the aftermath of what happened between her and Dex, and the ending of the show. But things get creepier when Perry starts getting haunted no matter where she is.

My Thoughts: I was completely blown away by the latest in this series. Halle's best one yet!

After what happened between Dex and Perry, and the fall out with her show, Perry now resides in seattle as a barista. Dex had been trying to contact Perry with the past couple months, but Perry doesn't respond as she changed her phone number and her e-mail, making it clear that she wants nothing to do with him.
As things are going good with her new job and making new friends, Perry's past somehow manages to come back to her. And most recent, Perry has been having a few episodes. Seeing things that aren't there, and even haunting her house.
And though Perry's trying her best to deal with it, she also gets a blast from her past. A colleague from the show, Max, stops by to let Perry know that the show wants Perry back as their host, without Dex. Perry is reluctant, and doesn't know what to do, as she confides in Max that something might be haunting her, or that something evil is inside her.
Together, Perry and Max try to get rid of the "demon" but things don't go as planned. Perry's sister finally calls Dex as a reinforcement, and together they take Perry to see an exorcist. This is the only option for them all, before Perry becomes even more violently dangerous. Can Perry survive the exorcist and Dex?

Wow! This novel literally kept me up at night. Super creepy, and unputdownable. Halle does it again, keeping readers entranced with the paranormal world. I love reading about Perry's wild adventures and what she's up to next.
There are so many shocking situations I don't know where to start! For those who don't want spoilers, I'll try to keep it minimal. But I was so shocked about what had happened to Perry and what her real cramps were related to. I kept thinking that maybe she was dreaming, or something rational other than that.
I also wasn't a fan of Max, and felt that even though he was giving Perry copious amount of attention, that he was a shady character, and didn't really have any intentions of really helping Perry. I was furious at Perry for not at least giving Dex a chance to explain his side of the story.
I enjoyed reading about the exorcism, even though it was incredibly creepy, I still couldn't keep my eyes off of it. I wasn't to thrilled with Perry's parents and the fact that they couldn't see what a real problem Perry's situation had become. I absolutely hated the ending, but makes me so anxious to read what happens next in the series. In general, an awesome read to a great series, and I can't wait for the next one in the series.

Would I recommend this book: Yes!

Rating: I give this book a 5/5.

Waiting On Wednesday!

Hey fellow readers! It's another posting of Waiting On Wednesday. Hosted by Breaking The Spine, this week's pre-publication is...

Time Between Us
by Tamara Ireland Stone
Expected Publication Date: October 9, 2012

Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet: she lives in 1995 Chicago and he lives in 2012 San Francisco. But Bennett’s unique ability to travel through time and space brings him into Anna’s life, and with him, a new world of adventure and possibility. As their relationship deepens, they face the reality that time might knock Bennett back where he belongs, even as a devastating crisis throws everything they believe into question. Against a ticking clock, Anna and Bennett are forced to ask themselves how far they can push the bounds of fate—and what consequences they can bear in order to stay together.

Fresh, exciting, and deeply romantic, Time Between Us is a stunning and spellbinding debut from an extraordinary new talent in YA fiction.

--From Amazon

I'm usually not one for time travel novels, as I can't stand all the science involved, but this one sounds really interesting and I can't wait to read how the relationship develops between Anna and Bennett. Hopefully this one won't be all filled with scientific explanations... Be sure to leave your links so I can see what pre-publication you are waiting on :)

Interview and Giveaway with guest author: Jessica Scott!

Hey fellow readers! Today I am glad to introduce, guest author, Jessica Scott.

Here's more with Jessica Scott and her latest novel, Because Of You,

Tell us a little bit about your latest novel.

My debut novel BECAUSE OF YOU asks the question who are you when you no longer have the rank on your chest. So many soldiers, myself included, identify very strongly with the uniform. My hero, Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison, ends up badly wounded and has to figure out if he’s still the man he thought he was.

Are any of the characters or situations in the novel based on real people and real events?

If you mean is there a real Shane Garrison running around out there? Probably but in name only. He’s an amalgamation of some of the guys I serve with. Like most writers I pull a piece of characterization from here and there and compile into the person we end up creating. But no, there’s no real Shane Garrison, at least not that I know of.

Though romances are usually just to read for pleasure, do you have a message you wish to let readers know from your novel?

I guess you could say that. I’m writing books that I want to read. The military is something that we live and breathe so when authors downplay the massive role that military life plays in a military character’s life and choices, it gets under my skin. And I also wanted people who wouldn’t necessarily pick up Martha Raddatz The Long Road Home or Thomas Ricks’ Fiasco to get some insight into life over there. Not the battles and the patrols but what it does to the person. I wanted to avoid a lot of clichés, though, too, in that I wanted to write about normal men and women in uniform, not Special Forces.

What was the hardest part about writing this novel?

Finding someone who was willing to buy the book. It’s a hard book to classify. Technically, it’s a contemporary romance but in the romance genre, anything with soldiers is usually a romantic suspense. So when agents and editors read “military romance” what they expected was romantic suspense and if you read it, it’s not a suspense. Plus, this was also the 2nd novel I ever wrote, which means I did a lot of learning (and by learning I mean rewriting) with it.

I know some authors deal with the dreaded Writer's Block. While writing this novel, did that happen to you? And what did you do to overcome it?

I’ve learned over the years (I’ve been writing for publication now for about 5 years) that when I’m stuck and I can’t seem to figure out where to go next, it usually means I’ve taken a wrong path in the story somewhere. I’ve either advanced the plot too quickly or I’ve got a critical scene in the wrong place. Chuck Wendig has an awesome piece about writer’s block (he swears it’s a myth & I’m inclined to agree with him but only to a point) and how to over come it. For me, it’s a matter of walking away and then coming back to the story, rereading from the start to figure out where I took the wrong turn. It usually ends up with vast swaths of material deleted.

Who do you consider as your most favorite character?

Sergeant Vic Carponti, hands down (no pun intended. He’s a lower arm amputee in BECAUSE OF YOU). He’s got a smart mouth on him and he’s never serious but when you need someone to go to the wall with you, he’s there. He kind of took on a life of his own.

Some authors use music to help them write. Do you listen to music while writing, or do you find other inspirational outlets for your creativity?

I am absolutely a music listener. I find I get the most writing done when I have a good earworm. And it can be anything: alternative, country, rock or metal. I listen to a lot of rock music and some of my favorites to write to are Digital Summer, Signs of Betrayal, Evans Blue and Tragedy Machine.

Who designed your covers, and do you get any say on the final outcome?

The art department at Random House designed the cover and I loved it. The only thing I asked them to do was to make the uniform pants greyer to match current army uniforms. We haven’t work forest green in half a decade!

Who or what gave you the inspiration to write this novel?

The first time I ever left my children, I started writing as a way to keep myself distracted. I was at Fort Benning GA for Officer Candidate School, my husband was in Iraq and my kids were with my mom. I didn’t really think that hanging out at bars was the appropriate place for a married mom of 2 so I took up part time residence at the local Barnes and Noble. And I just started writing one day and well, you know how the rest goes. Five years later, I got “the call” and it was every bit as awesome as everyone says it is.

Do you have any future works planned?

I’m currently under contract for 2 more books with Loveswept. UNTIL THERE WAS YOU is with my editor right now and it set for October 8, 2012. BACK TO YOU is set for a release of March 2013 as it stands right now.

Thanks so much for having me here today! I’d love to give away a copy of BECAUSE OF YOU to one commenter.

WTF???

I know that plagiarism is a sensative subject in the book blogging world, especially now, and I realize that people are probably sick and tired of the overdone topic.
I swear I wasn't going to breach on this situation again, but after I saw the post on this subject on The Story Siren's blog once again, I feel that I need to express my thoughts as well.
First and foremost, I commend Kristi for trying to make up for her mistakes. But there is a right way and a wrong way, and what she did was totally wrong.
The first post she put up was titled "Let's Talk Plagiarism" along with a guest author. And after a couple comments on her first post, she then posted her reasons for starting a week long discussion about this topic. First, I understand that there may have been technical issues regarding which post came up first, but what comes down to is that this was still done horribly. I agree with some of the bloggers who commented that the author involved got a lot of Krisiti's blame.
I also felt that her reasons were not very well addressed. I felt that she was still trying to excuse herself of the situation. She also added a line stating that an author told her that "everyone at one point in their lives had crossed the plagiarism line, whether they admit it or not..." First off, how do you know that? You don't go around following everyone and reading everything that people put up on the net. And this sentence also implies that everyone is the same as her. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't want to be put in the same boat as a plagiarist when I have done nothing wrong. I have always given credit where credit is due. And if I think I have written something that may have already been said, then I will quote it, even if I don't know who exactly said it. And it feels like she wrote that sentance to justify what she did.
I think that these two posts have made things worse for Kristi, and has already added more fuel to the fire. She really should have left the topic alone after apologizing twice. After these posts, I feel like I have lost what little respect I had for her, and because of this, will most likely no longer be participating in her IMM feature.

Review: Storm by Brigid Kemmerer

                                                        Book: Storm by Brigid Kemmerer
                                                        Pages: 353
                                                        Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                                                        Source: Library

Short Synopsis: Ever since Becca saved Chris Merrick from a beating at school, Becca's world has been turned upside down. With a stream of hot guys around every corner in the Merrick house, Becca manages to get in trouble, even when she's not trying.

My Thoughts: I loved this novel. Kept me intrigued at every page, and had me curious for more.

Becca is about to go home one evening after taking a self defense class at school. She hears noises, and decides to check it out. She witnesses a school beating and jumps into help the victim, Chris Merrick. But what she thought was an act of saving a life, turns out to be so much more.
As Becca gets to know Chris a little better, she is thrown into a world where supernatural elements, such as earth, air, fire, and water can all be controlled by the Merrick brothers, and others like them. She is also brought into a lengthy, complicated war, and is caught in the middle.
And as soon as she starts having feelings and understanding Chris and his brothers, a new kid named Hunter comes along. He's different, protective, and genuinely seems to care about Becca.
But as things start to get even more complicated, Becca is starting to notice that Hunter might not be who he claims to be. And with all the threats that Becca has been getting recently, Becca doesn't know who to trust. Can Becca help Chris through his problems, and find out who she really wants to be with?

I loved this novel. So many hot guys in one story? What more could you want? And the main character, Becca, is a determined, strong willed individual who will do what she can to defend herself, and those she cares for.
There was so much male chemistry in this novel, it was intoxicating! I loved reading about the instant attraction between Becca and Chris, and on the other hand, I also enjoyed reading about Becca and Hunter, and was intrigued to read how their friendship grew, but it was also interesting to compare the two relationships and see how they differed.
I also don't think I've read too many stories where the elements of earth, air, fire, and wind have all been controlled by strong, independent, and not to mention extremely hot brothers. I loved everything about this novel, and had me devouring it greedily. There were a couple questions that I hope will be answered later on as well.
First off, how come Becca never knew about what she could do, or about her powers as well? And how come Becca never really knew about what her father really did? All in all, a really great read with an oh my god ending, and I definitely can't wait to read what happens next.

Would I recommend this book: Yes!

Rating I give this book a 4.5/5.

Am I Boring You?

Hey there fellow readers. It's yet another rambling. Today I wanted to talk about books and how boring/exciting they can get for readers. I've been in the book blogging business for a little over a year now, and reading for practically since I could read.
I love how when you crack open that new book you bought or borrowed, and the excitement that you find yourself in, when you start to loose yourself in the story, and almost imagine yourself as the main character. But what happens when you get to the point where it no longer becomes fun?
You know what I mean. No offense to the authors, but sometimes when you get a book thinking, 'Wow! This'll be a good one', but in reality, it turns out to be a flop? What do you as a reader do? Do you continue knowing it'll never work out between you and the story, or do shun the book?
Maybe I've been in a reading rut lately, but some of the stories I pick up, have been a bit of a disappointment. The latest one I'm reading turned out to be a major disappointment, and I was sad because it gained so much popularity in the blogging biz. Has that ever happened to you? Everyone recommending such an awesome book, ranting and raving about how great it is, and when you finally get around to it, it just falls really flat?
Maybe I'm a picky reader, but when I start investing my time into a great read, I'm always searching for that one great moment in the book that's going to get me hooked and really focusing all my attention. And if I can't find that spark early on, I have a tendency to toss it aside. I rarely re-read novels. Especially the ones that I don't finish. Because really, what's the point, when it was such a major disappointment in the first place?
And maybe it's just me, but I also feel that the stories in the book business have become a bit redundant and overdone. Like the vampire genre for example? Don't get me wrong, I love how vampire guys are portrayed just like any other girl reading these novels, but when is it enough? As an avid reader, I guess I'm just anxious and waiting for the next hot genre to come along. I applaud those of you who have stuck through reading this lengthy post, and encourage you readers to leave comments concerning this issue. Hope you all have had a great weekend :)

Review: First Visions, Second Sight by Heather Topham Wood

Book: First Vistions, Second Sight by Heather Wood
                           Pages: 228
                           Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                           Source: Sent from author

Short Synopsis: Ever since waking up from a coma, Kate Edwards receives visions of the past, which in turn helps her to find a missing boy.

My Thoughts: An interesting change of the psychic genre, and kept me wanting to read more through out the novel.

Kate Edwards, now 21, has survived a two year coma. Upon waking from the coma, Kate was able to locate a missing boy. And when the information turned out to be true, Kate was bombarded with the media constantly, until Kate lied and told everyone that it was a one time deal.
After the coma fiasco, Kate started to lead a normal life as best as she could, though a little sheltered. Her parents are in denial of her special powers, but Kate does everything she can to cope. It isn't until a handsome cop named Jared Corbett shows up at Kate's door one day. He claims that his girlfriend's sister has been taken captive, and Jared is asking Kate to help him out with any possible leads on the case.
At first Kate denies that she still has the power because of unwanted publicity, but after Jared's visit, Kate has a vision of what had happened to Cori, Jared's girlfriend's sister. Kate decides to help Jared out, as long as her identity stays a secret. But with Jared's jealous girlfriend, Kate's ability doesn't stay hidden very long. Can Kate manage to save Cori from her kidnapper in time, and set aside her strong attraction to Jared too?

A very different take within the supernatural genre. Most psychics I read about have visions of the future, and not the past. It was interesting to read how Kate's powers worked, and how she used them to save the missing kids.
I loved reading about the relationship between Jared and Kate. And though he was already taken, it was interesting to read how their relationship developed, and what they really meant to each other. And though it was understandable, I didn't really like how he had treated Kate when he was with his girlfriend. The one person who also managed to get under my skin the most was in fact Jared's girlfriend Nikki, and the fact that she abused personal information to gain her own satisfaction didn't help the situation either.
It was intriguing to read how Kate's powers worked. The fact that she couldn't control whose mind she slipped into, and what visions came to her, makes the reader understand why she hasn't had too many relationships or friendships as well. And because of her special powers, it also shows that she isn't always perfect, but she tries to do what's right. In general, an entertaining novel, with colorful characters, and I can't wait to read more about Kate and Jared.

Would I recommend this book: Yes

Rating: I give this book a 4/5.

Waiting On Wednesday!

Hey fellow book lovers! It's another posting of Waiting On Wednesday! Hosted by Breaking The Spine, this week's pre-publication is...

Death And The Girl Next Door
by Darynda Jones
Expected Publication Date: October 2, 2012

From the author of The New York Times bestselling series that began with First Grave on the Right—a thrilling Young Adult novel garnering high praise and early buzz from major authors

Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace.  Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home.  For Lorelei, life goes on.

High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be.  Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it,  standing outside her house in the dark, night after night.  Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school.  Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity.  What does Jared know about her parents?  Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei?  And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real?  Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones's first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.

First of all, I love the cover. And the fact that there seems to hopefully be a love triangle going on sounds like an already awesome book. I can't wait to read the story behind it, and all the romance as well. Be sure to leave your link so I can see what pre-publication you are waiting on.

Review: The Unquiet by Jeannine Garsee

Book: The Unquiet by Jeannine Garsee
                                                 Pages: 406
                                                 Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                                                 Source: NetGalley

Short Synopsis: Corrine, aka Rinn, just moved from California to Ohio with her mother. Being the new girl can be tough. Especially when your new school is haunted, and the ghost starts haunting you.

My Thoughts: A very creepy tale. One where I couldn't wait to find out the story behind all the haunting and creepiness.

Rinn and her mother just moved to Ohio. Rinn wasn't too thrilled of the movement, but ever since the horrible death of her grandmother, and the fact that she hears voices and has to take meds, Rinn doesn't have much of an option.
Rinn manages to makes some friends. The super hot boy next door, named Nate, and has easily fallen in with the popular girls. But it isn't until she gets warned that the school has been haunted for years, that things start to go horribly wrong.
Rumors start spreading around like wildfire when Rinn and her friends are experiencing horrible situations. Rinn gets word that the tunnel leading towards the long ago abandoned pool is haunted by a girl named Annaliese. Ever since Rinn arrived, her friends have been targeted by Annaliese, making them loose the things they love the most, and in some cases, even making them loose their lives. Rinn must find a way to put a stop to Annaliese before more students die, especially those close to her.

I originally loved this idea. A haunted school with creepy images. It was interesting to read a main character with a mental problem, and wasn't always perfect. Her past was intense, and moving to a new school with a ghost made things even more intense. Corrine doesn't always have her head on straight so to speak, but she's strong, and determined to find out the truth.
It didn't really make sense to me, however, that even though Rinn was "friends" with the popular girls, and didn't really like all of them, that she'd continue to hang out with them, even after what they'd done.  But it also shows that she is really loyal that no matter what they did to Rinn, that Rinn still wanted to find out the cause of what was making everyone crazy. It also really didn't make sense to me how the fire started with her grandmother, and why her Grandmother wasn't able to escape the fire herself.
I loved reading the relationship between Rinn and Nate, and the fact that Nate knows about Rinn's past and still wasn't afraid to be with her, made their relationship even more romantic.
It was sad to know the real reason behind the haunting, and what had really happened. I didn't like the fact that Annaliese went after the teens, even though it wasn't really their fault, but their parents fault. In general, a very scary tale, one that will keep you up at night, thinking about Annalise.

Would I recommend this book: Yes

Rating: I give this book a 4/5.

Review: Perception by Kim Harrington

                                                Book: Perception by Kim Harrington
                                                Pages: 275
                                                Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
                                                Source: Library

Short Synopsis: Clare is back. After the horrible incident, Clare has become the school celebrity, and has gained some popularity. But with this unwanted publicity, comes a stalker.

My Thoughts: Another awesome read by Kim Harrington. I couldn't put it down. If you've read Clarity, this is one to definitely not miss.

Ever since Clare's unfortunate mishap, she has become the local celebrity at school. But she hates being the center of attention. And things get worse when Clare starts receiving notes from a secret admirer. And if things couldn't get worse, another girl goes missing.
Clare feels that with the powers that she has, she has an obligation to find the missing girl. But there's a catch. The missing girl wrote her mother a note, and most of her personal belongings are gone. There's only so much that Clare can do.
And through all the drama going on in Clare's life, she still has feelings for both Gabriel and Justin, and doesn't know who she should choose. Though she'll always have feelings for Justin, she's not sure if he gets her at all. And if things couldn't get even more complicated, her brother Perry is experiencing personal, health related issues. Can Clare find out who her stalker is before things get too rough, and find out what happened to the missing girl?

If you love the paranormal world, this is one series that is a definite must read. Clare and her family have a unique psychic connection to help save innocents. Clare is strong, independent, with a mind of her own, and is always willing to take actions into her own hands.
I loved reading about the love triangle between Clare, Gabriel and Justin. And though both Gabriel and Justin and have strong feelings for Clare, it felt pretty obvious that Justin didn't seem genuinely concerned for Clare's feelings. I hate how Justin treated Clare, and still expected her to pick him.
And I loved trying to find out who Clare's secret admirer really was, and how he was connected. I really had no idea who the culprit was until the end of the novel.
Harrington writes with such fierce suspense and mystery, that I couldn't put down the novel. I wasn't too thrilled with how it ended. We find out about a lot of shocking facts. We find out what really happened with Justin, and we also find out that Gabriel "needed" an excuse to stay, but in my opinion, it made him feel a bit needy, and should have expressed his intentions towards Clare more clear. Overall, I loved this series, and look forward to reading more of Harrington's novels.

Would I recommend this book: Yes!

Rating: I give this book a 4.5/5.

You can't always win, no matter what

Hey fellow readers. From my experience as a blogger, there is a certain situation that has been on my mind for awhile. The reason I got into book blogging was the fact that I loved reading. I also wanted to give my opinions and what I felt about those novels. At first I never imagined anyone would listen, or the fact that I had such a huge audience.
But ever since I started posting my reviews, I always felt put down that not everyone agreed with my thoughts when amazon puts up the number of "helpful votes." I realize not everyone is going to love the same books you love, or that not everyone agrees with what you have to say. But when someone marks that your review was not helpful, it still always manages to hurt just a bit.
As for the title I posted, in this business, I feel that it rings true. It's funny that I gave a very popular book a low rating because I wasn't able to finish it, and a handful of people hinted that my review was not helpful. Then I gave another book a very high rating that had mixed reviews, but ultimately, the unhelpful votes came out on top by one vote.
My main concern on Amazon is that do the "helpful votes" really help people who are thinking about buying the book/item, or is it the content underneath that are used to describe how customers viewed the book/item to persuade you? And on top of that, do you as a reader/customer ever rely or feel persuaded to buy an item on what other bloggers/customers write on Amazon?
And on a related note, do you also think that a rating system helps or hinders overall reviews? Should Amazon get rid of the "helpful votes" and rating system, and just rely on what customers have to say? These are just some of the main points that I wanted to come across today. Feel free to add your feedback on the subject to let me know what you think.

Review: Loosing Face by Annie Try

Book: Loosing Face by Annie Try
                                                Pages: 229
                                                Genre: Young Adult
Source: Sent from John Hunt Publishing

Short Synopsis: After surviving a horrific car accident, Cass tries to cope with the aftermath of the situation, her so called "friends" and life in general.

My Thoughts: I was attracted to the story because it seemed original, moving, and something I could get lost in.

Cassandra thought it was just another day. But things changed when she got into a car with a boy she liked. What turned out to be a prank, turned into something almost deadly. As the two headed out, Stephen, aka Spider, who is driving the car, looses control, and crashes.
Spider walks off, scotch free, while Cassandra is a mess, blood everywhere, and is on the brink of death. Her friends who were right behind her, witness the scene and call for help.
When Cassandra wakes up again, she is in the hospital, with severe injuries. One of her injuries include a lost eye. Cassandra must go through a series of procedures in order to look semi-normal.
All the while, Cassandra is dealing with her emotions, the fact that she no longer looks the way she used to, and how it effects her loved ones.
Cassandra and her best friend Emma, have decided to write down their feelings regarding the situation, and to turn it into a novel. While Cassandra is dealing with the after effects of the situation, Cassandra is given an opportunity to tell her side of the story on live TV, so that others can learn what she has gone through.

I felt that the story idea was unique and original, but there was quite a few things that bugged me through out the novel. I felt that the novel was moving, and had a lot of sympathy for Cassandra and what she was experiencing.
I wasn't a major fan of the writing style, as it took a while for me to get into, and I also wasn't a fan of the format, as the novel was told in a multiple point of view. As for the story itself, I was annoyed by the fact that the character Spider didn't have any real consequences, such as at least revoking his right to drive, or community service, or anything at all, for being the cause of the accident. He also infuriated me with his cocky attitude, and the fact that he was inconsiderate of Cassandra's feelings, and that he immediately assumed that they were an item.
And though we experience some emotions from Cassandra, I kind of felt that if the author, Try, were writing about something so serious, it should come in a more serious tone. I felt that the tone was too upbeat, and I kept waiting for Cassandra to experience more anger moments, especially towards Spider, instead of barely expressing anything at all. Overall, it was an okay read, had some potential, but a little lacking for me.

Would I recommend this book: Maybe

Rating: I give this book a 2.5/5.

Follow Friday!

Hey readers! It's another posting of Follow Friday! Hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read, this week's question is...

Q: This Sunday in the U.S. is Mother's Day. In celebration, what are some of your favorite books with strong mother/child relationships?

A. Hm. This is a tough one. Most novels I read don't have a strong relationships with their parents, or aren't really mentioned at all. I guess the only one I can think of is Wendy and her real mother Elora. Though she didn't have a good relationship with her host mother, and barely knew Elora, they still managed to find a common ground when Wendy begins to take over her duty of claiming the throne. Be sure to leave your link so I can read your answer too. Happy Mothers day, and hope you all have a great weekend! :)

Apology and Clarification

Hello fellow bloggers and readers. First of all, it has come to my attention that many were outraged by my last post concerning plagirism. For that I apologize. It was never my intent to offend anyone. I just wanted to inform and make things more clear about the situation. As stated before in my previous post, I had seen many people take credit for someone else's meme. One blogger had the title of Book Haul number One. Underneath it, they had written something along the lines of, "I want to introduce a new meme that I will be participating in, which I have created, titled Book Haul..." Another blogger had started linking Stacking The Shleves back to their blog, which to me indicated that they were the ones to come up with the meme. My problem with this situation was the fact that both these bloggers were new and I had never heard of them before this year. I apologize for offending anyone from my last post. It was never meant to be a slap in the face for those who created the memes that I had named. I just wanted to inform new bloggers that they should do their research before they post a new meme.
