Short Synopsis: Sydney is torn from her family one day when the alchemists call upon Sydney to act as a guardian to Jill Dragomir, the sister of Queen Lissa Dragomir. Together, they are sent to a human boarding school, to blend in and keep Jill safe from the strigori.
My Thoughts: An enjoyable read, interesting plot, and familiar characters are back once again.
Sydney, an alchemist by trade, has disgraced her family, when she decided to help Rose Hathaway escape her horrible fate. Sydney is suddenly given a second chance when an opportunity arrises when the alchemists orchestrate a way to keep Jill Dragomir safe from Strigori attacks and anyone else who may want to harm Queen Lissa through Jill.
Jill and Sydney, along with another guardian, Eddie, are presented as brother and sisters and enroll in a private school in Palm Springs. As all three try to adjust being in a human school, and bullies, Sydney also uncovers something else going on within the walls of Amberwood Prep. Someone is using alchemist tools and vampire blood, giving students a rush of feeling high, or super human strength hidden in the form of tattoos. Sydney enlists the help of Adrian, and together, they uncover a secret no one could have imagined.
It was definitely nice coming back to the world of the vampire academy series. I loved reading about the new character involved and the new dangers that they are involved in. There were a couple things that I didn't find too pleasing though. It felt like a lot of the characters were a bit too whiny throughout the whole book. Especially Adrian and Jill. I get that both were put in a position where neither wanted to be, but there wasn't much that either could do. It was also equally frustrating to see Jill with all these male characters vying for her attention but no one really stepping up and doing anything about it except Lee, which turned out to be the wrong move. And maybe it was just me, but as I read on, there seemed to be a LOT of chemistry between Sydney and Adrian, and all I could think about was 'when are they going to kiss?!' The plot took an interesting take with the tattoos, and I never would have guessed who was actually involved. Overall, an interesting take from the vampire academy world, and I can't wait to read what happens next.
Would I recommend this book: Yes
Rating: I give this book a 4/5.
