Book: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
Pages: 276
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Source: Library
Short Synopsis: Belly and her family are returning to the Cousins Beach, where she has her favorite people, Susannah, her mother's best friend, and her two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah.
My Thoughts: An interesting read about self discovery, romance, and having fun for the summer.
Belly and her family always end up at Cousins Beach for the summer, with their mother's best friend, and her two sons. But this is a summer that they all won't forget. Belly is excited to have a summer where she will see her two best summer friends, Conrad and Jeremiah.
But this is the summer that changes everything. As soon as Belly arrives, both Conrad and Jeremiah notice a change in Belly. Belly starts to remember what it was like with Conrad and Jeremiah around, as her long time crush on Conrad still has not gone away. It isn't until the group head out to a party, where Belly meets a new boy named Cam.
But things aren't all fun and games, when Belly discovers that her mother's best friend, Susannah, is seriously ill. She also discovers that Conrad and Jeremiah's parents aren't on the greatest of terms. Can Belly and the group survive through Susannah's illness, and can Belly finally win Conrad's heart?
An interesting cast of characters. Very emotional, and I practically devoured this book in one sitting. I loved all the drama, and couldn't wait to read what happened next. Belly is an intriguing character in the midst of a lot of hot guys.
This novel is not your typical summer romance novel. The narration style is a bit different than I am used to, as it rotates between the present and past memories, as we get to experience life through Belly's eyes.
I wasn't a real fan of how Belly was portrayed in this novel, when we as a reader continue to read how Belly falls for Conrad, time after time, and still manages to get her heart broken. I also didn't like the way that Conrad treated Belly, especially when Conrad did an unforgivable action, and Belly forgives him the next day, like it never mattered. Even if Conrad was going through certain issues, the way he treated Belly without apologizing at all, really agitated me.
And Belly's best friend that came to visit the one summer, she seemed like the most annoying character, as all the boys held their attention on her, and Belly's friend knew it, and took everyone's feelings for granted. Overall, a very fast paced read, drama grabbing the reader left and right, and I can't wait to read what happens next.
Would I recommend this book: Yes
