Review: What Happened To Goodbye? by Sarah Dessen

Book: What Happened To Goodbye? by Sarah Dessen
Pages: 402
Genre: Young Adult
Source: Library

Short Synopsis: Ever since her parents divorce, Mclean has no clue who she really is. But as she and her father move to a new place, Mclean is starting to discover her true self.

My Thoughts: An interesting take on identity crises mixed with romance, but not my usual cup of tea.

Mclean has always been unsure of who she really is. After the divorce of her parents and staying with her father, Mclean hasn't always had it easy. With her father's job as an interim chef, and always having to move around, Mclean has found it easier to deal with life by changing names, and lifestyles.
But when her father moves to a new place, she is unable to change her name in time, and is now stuck as Mclean. From the first day at a new school, Mclean must discover what it really means to form friendships, staying in one place, and having a new life, and maybe even finding love. But there are certain circumstances that may prevent Mclean from staying. Can Mclean survive her new life?

This is the second Sarah Dessen novel that I have tried to complete. Honestly, I don't get why Sarah Dessen novels are so popular. It's like an epic love story, but towards the last half of the novel, all I kept thinking about was, 'when is this book going to end?' I felt like a lot of the novel could have been edited out, and kept thinking that this book probably didn't go through an editing process.
Okay. Venting aside, the story itself was okay. I was a bit disappointed that the relationship between Mclean and Dave didn't really escalate to much. Mclean the character herself, was kind of wishy-washy and didn't seem to have a great relationship with either of her parents. Her only real strong friendship seemed to be with Dave. I didn't really understand her parents relationships as well, especially her father's, when he seemed to be using a lot of women. Overall, it was okay, had some potential, and maybe it's just me, but Mclean's entire family seemed to have some issues.

Would I recommend this book: Eh.

Rating: I give this book a 3/5.
